Remembering President Cory Aquino

On August 1, 2009, Filipinos all over the world mourn the death of former Philippine president Corazon Aquino.

“Former President Corazon Aquino, who swept away a dictator with a “people power” revolt and then sustained democracy by fighting off seven coup attempts in six years, died on Saturday, her son said. She was 76.” – Associated Press

I will never forget as a young high school seminarian at Don Bosco, and as an aspiring photojournalist, the first “editorial” photographs I took of a famous person in the Philippines was of President Aquino. I used the 110 mm camera my mother gave me to capture pictures of her.

I wanted to share these images to all, which remain in one of my scrap books that I built when I was 16 years old.

A PHOTOGRAPHY TRIBUTE TO THE NEW PRESIDENT

Today, January 20, 2009 Barack Obama is going to be sworn in as the nation’s first African-American president.  On Saturday, January 17, 2009, he undertook a whistle-stop train journey that symbolically links him to the nation’s icon Abraham Lincoln. Like Lincoln, who travelled by rail from Philadelphia to Washington on the last leg of his journey to be sworn in for his first term in 1861, Obama too had traveled from the birthplace of the nation’s democracy to the capital city. On his way to DC, he made a historic stop in Wilmington, Delaware, where Delaware native Vice-president elect Joe Biden joined him in his journey via train. I am fortunate to be part of documenting this event.

Canon 5D Mark II is revolutionizing news photo and videography

Check out these news videos that I shot using Canon 5D Mark II. Not only I was able to grab a high-quality image that ran on the front page of The News Journal, but I was able to capture video using just one camera. No need to switch from a still camera to a video camera.

Canon 5D Mark II – “Newspaper job” photo and video test

When I went to cover US Vice president-elect Joe Biden feeding the homeless in Wilmington on Christmas Eve, I brought with me just one camera- my Canon 5D Mark II. Just like any digital photojournalist I tried to do both- shoot stills and video. The 5D Mark II made it easier to do both, especially with the limited time that the Secret Service gave us to take pictures inside. What’s amazing is, you can shoot stills while your are video recording. Check out this short clip, shot using also a 70-200 mm and a 16-35 mm lenses.
